How should it be stored?
Yerba mate should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from humidity and direct sunlight to maintain its freshness and flavor. An airtight container is recommended to prevent exposure to air and moisture, which can lead to loss of quality or mold growth. It should also be kept away from strong odors, as yerba mate easily absorbs surrounding scents. Refrigeration is not advised, as condensation can affect its texture and taste. Proper storage ensures a long-lasting, rich, and flavorful mate experience.
Why is it so bitter?
Yerba mate has a naturally earthy and slightly bitter taste due to its rich concentration of antioxidants and tannins. The bitterness varies depending on the cut, drying process, and whether stems are included. To reduce bitterness, use cooler water, try a blend with added flavors, or opt for a milder variety.
What are the dietary requirements?
Yerba mate is naturally gluten-free, vegan, and keto-friendly. However, some flavored blends may contain natural sweeteners or additives, so always check the ingredient list if you have specific dietary restrictions.
How is it prepared and drunk?
Yerba mate is traditionally enjoyed in a gourd with a bombilla (filtered straw). Fill the gourd about two-thirds full with yerba mate, insert the bombilla at an angle, and pour warm (not boiling) water over the leaves. Sip through the bombilla and refill as needed.
